Phonics Workshops with Pupils and Parents

Pilgrim Academy staff have been working closely with family members to support our youngest children with developing their skills to support their reading.

Our reception classes, Frogs and Newts, from our ‘Pond of Possibilities’ thoroughly enjoyed their phonics workshop with our visitors this week. Early Years Leader, Julia Somerscales, said, ‘We talked about the sound the letters make in words, using our ‘rollercoasters’ to blend and using our ‘elastic bands’ to segment to read words. We then applied our new letter in some writing too! We really hope our visitors enjoyed their morning and look forward to seeing you all again soon!

This is part of a series of workshops, intended to support parents with helping their children at home – as well as having lots of fun, working with their children in the setting.

Similar workshops are taking in place in Key Stage 1 and as we approach Christmas, classes across the school will be organising sessions for family members to join their children in a range of craft activities.
