Mister Mayor visits to support World Book Day

Pupils at Pilgrim Academy were treated to a visit from Mister Mayor.

‘The Worshipful Mayor of the Borough of North East Lincolnshire.’ visited after the trip was organised by Mrs Joanne Ireson, Student Leadership Co-ordinator, as part of the focus on learning more about important figures in our town and the importance of civic duty.

Mister Mayor spent the first part of his visit in the Key Stage 2 assembly where he was pleased to hear about the recent successes of some of students in cross-country and football, as well as hearing about individual rewards some children had earned through our Carrot Reward system.

The second part of the assembly focused on World Book Day, where Mister Mayor spoke about the importance of reading and how important it was for the children to try their best at all times so they can get a good job when the are older.

He went on to share his love of reading about trains when he was younger, especially steam trains and said that his favourite books were probably the Thomas the Tank Engine stories.

Mister Mayor was particularly impressed when he saw that one of the children, Gabriel Hoodless, had dressed as a popular character from these books and had his photo taken with him.

In addition, Mister Mayor spoke to the children about his role and his charity work.

He also spoke about his magnificent regalia and everyone was very interested in how he was dressed – some of the younger children asked him what book character he had come as for the day!

Following the assembly, Mister Mayor had a full tour of the academy with the Executive Principal, Mr Clark.

He visited all classrooms and spoke to all of the children who had not been in the assembly.

Mister Mayor commented on the wonderful atmosphere around the school and was particularly impressed with our outdoor learning and wildlife areas.

Mister Mayor has invited our student council to attend the civic offices, which they are very excited about and we hope to arrange later this term.

On behalf of everyone at Pilgrim Academy, Mr Clark would like to thank Mister Mayor for giving up his morning and helping to make World Book Day an even more memorable occasion for the children.
