Curriculum Leader: Mrs Kirsten Wright

Intent: At Pilgrim Academy, Geography supports an understanding of places and environments. Through their work in geography, we want children to learn about their local area and compare their life in this area with that in other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. This starts at an early age in Early Years, through looking at 'people and communities' and 'the world,' aspects of the Understanding the World unit. We want our children to be familiar with the local surroundings through visits and references to the local area. Links to local businesses, for example, help to forge an understanding of the importance of Immingham docks. In addition, geography has connections to many other curriculum areas, such as History and Science, and our aim is to link knowledge and skills together, through thematic topics. For example, Year 5 and 6 study Ancient Greece, which provides wonderful opportunities to develop knowledge and skills across geography and wider curriculum subjects. We want out children to develop skills such as learning how to draw and interpret maps and developing the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem-solving. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children will gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. Through geography, we will motivate children to find out about the physical world and enable them to recognize the importance of sustainable development for the future of mankind.

What approach do we take to teaching Geography? Most curriculum subjects are taught through a thematic approach. For example, the theme topic may focus on Life in Ancient Greece; Around the World in 80 Days; The Animal Kingdom, amongst many other areas. Our medium-term plans then identify the following, where staff will ensure coverage and skills across the curriculum subject areas, including Geography:

  • Intent: What wider skills do we want the children to have developed by the end of this theme, supporting future learning and life skills?
  • Intent: Outline the factual/topical areas that will be covered, enhancing the development of knowledge and cultural capital?
  • Intent: What opportunities will there be to develop literacy and numeracy skills?
  • Intent: Cross-Curricular links: Which curriculum areas will be covered during this theme, developing cross-curriculum knowledge and skills?
  • Impact: What opportunities will be provided to assess the development of knowledge and skills?
  • Impact: What specific areas of knowledge/skills will be developed during this theme, which will be assessed at different times by the teacher and by the pupil?
  • Impact: What specific wider skills will be developed during this theme, which will be assessed at different times by the teacher and by the pupil?

Alongside this, we use Milestones for teachers and Curriculum Leaders to monitor coverage and track progress across the curriculum, ensuring appropriate sequencing is in place. We use the milestones created by Chris Quigley Education, in conjunction with our thematic planning to ensure the children develop their knowledge and skills as they move from Early Years through to Key Stage 1 and 2.
